Dan McDermott

Dan McDermott is the only high school athlete named to the Staten Island Advance all-time Dream Team in basketball and All-Century Team in baseball.
McDermott was 32-3 as a pitcher at Curtis High School, 9-1 in the city playoffs, and led the Warriors to back-to-back city championships in 1961 and 1962; and carried Curtis to a third-place finish in the city basketball playoffs, setting a tournament scoring record that stood for decades.

Kyle McAlarney

Kyle McAlarney scored a Staten Island record 2,566 points at Moore Catholic, fourth best all-time in New York State, and was the 2005 State Player of the Year and New York City scholar-athlete of the Year.

Kyle McAlarney was an All-Big East guard at Notre Dame, where he set a school records for three-point shooting – including 10 treys against North Carolina – and an all-star in the France’s Pro A League.

Jen Derevjanik

Jen Derevjanik was a winner everywhere she played, from her days at St. Peter’s High School, where the Eagles won Staten Island and Archdiocesan titles all four years, to George Mason University, where she started a record 116 games and led the Patriots in scoring and assists, to the Women’s National Basketball Association. 

In her five-year WNBA career, Derevjanik played on the 2004 and 2005 league runner-up Connecticut Sun, before winning a title with the 2007 Phoenix Mercury.

Did You Know?

In Jen Derevjanik’s four seasons at St. Peter’s High School, the Eagles never lost to a Staten Island team.

Dan Boylan Sr.

Before New Dorp High School had a football team, Dan Boylan organized and coached the New Dorp Queens, a sandlot football team that won nine sandlot championships in 15 seasons.
Boylan’s Queens went undefeated five times, holding opponents scoreless in three of those seasons, and counted high school teams like St. Cecelia’s of Englewood, N.J. coached by future National Football League coaching legend Vince Lombardi, among their victims.

Larry Anderson

Larry Anderson was a three-sport star at Curtis High School, a two-time all-city centerfielder, football MVP and basketball point guard, and winner of the 1960 Robert Maranville Award as the top student-athlete in New York City.
Anderson captained the baseball team at NYU, and played on the basketball team ranked No. 1 for a time in the country. He returned to coach the Curtis basketball team to three Island titles, and guide the Wagner College baseball team to its first-ever post-season tournament.
